Locals Residents Losing Cash To Scammers!

Over recent months we have noticed a significant increase in scam calls to customers in the local area and deal daily with customers in our workshop who have been targeted. We can provide support by removing remote control software, spyware and tracking infections and offering advice on how to detect and prevent future attacks.

What To Look Out For

The majority of scam calls are cold calls, usually from a company or an individual claiming to be either from or in partnership with Microsoft or an internet service provider. Unfortunately due to recent security breaches at a number of high profile internet service providers and email hosts, large amounts of private customer data has been stolen and sold onto fraudsters. With this information the scammer sounds legitimate and can create a false sense of trust with their target. For example, if you are a TalkTalk customer and get a call out of the blue from someone claiming to be TalkTalk who presents you with your customer number, address etc, there is a good chance you would believe them.

Not all of these scams are cold calls. A common ploy by internet fraudsters is to create bogus websites that are very good replicas of well known sites and these get indexed by search engines such as Google in the same way as the real sites. So when you are using Google to search for the telephone number for say your antivirus vendor – you end up calling the fraudster.

We have also seen an increase in the number of fake Microsoft pop ups that look legitimate, often informing you that your computer is infected or that an issue on your PC or laptop needs urgent attention and to call them right away. The fake Microsoft  “representative” will then gain ask access to your computer, and with it any sensitive financial data you have stored.
