‘WannaCry’ Ransomware: What You Need To Know

By now you are probably aware of the massive malware attack that occurred yesterday afternoon, infecting NHS computers and over 50,000 computers in 99 countries across the world.

The infection, dubbed ‘WannaCry’, is a form of ransomware. A virus that encrypts a user’s files and demands a ransom of hundreds of pounds to be sent to decrypt the data.

We are currently communicating with customers regarding the issue but at the time of writing the infection is still spreading.

Microsoft have already issued a security patch in a Windows Update for Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

Chances are that Windows 10 machines have already automatically updated, but we are advising customers to run Windows Updates immediately.

How to run updates on Windows 7:

  1. Click on the Start Menu.
  2. Click on All Programs.
  3. Click on Windows Update.
  4. Click Search for Updates.
  5. Install all found updates.
  6. Restart your computer when prompted and go back to option 1 above until there are no more updates remaining.

If you need help with installing updates on other Windows operating systems please call us on 01883 330 333 for further advice.
